Clitheroe’s Best Gastropubs

Everybody loves great food, at great prices, with a great atmosphere.

Country pubs can combine all three, with their heartwarming, delicious food served up in a cosy and intimate setting – and Clitheroe does country pubs to perfection!

The recently-published list of the Top 50 Best Gastropubs in England spelt out for the rest of the world what visitors and residents of Clitheroe and its surrounding areas already knew – that when it comes to top quality gastro pub food, this area boasts some of the best. Its top venues combine style and cosiness, comfort and class, and incredible food without the hefty price tag.

In fact, four of the top Gastropubs reside in Clitheroe, and that is where the fun starts.

All are within driving distance of Laythams’ stunning holiday accommodation and a weekend spent here can easily accommodate a visit to each! Sample them all and you can be the judge!

The Number 1 Pub in the 2017 Good Food Guide and Number 4 on the Top 50 list is The Freemasons at Wiswell. Using locally-sourced, fresh ingredients for maximum flavour, they boast that their staff are local too, which gives an extra authentic touch. What’s more, there really is something for everyone, with dishes ranging from £5 up to £40. It is up to you to decide how fancy you’re feeling, and they can provide whatever you need.

Next at number Number 13 is the Parkers Arms – a delightful 2mile country walk or a 6-minute drive from Laythams. This particular Gastropub has jumped up 35 places on the list to secure its place – no small achievement – and all the more reason to see what you’ve been missing. This establishment has always been a firm favourite amongst visitors to Laythams, not least because it’s within walking distance, the views are stunning, the food is delicious, local and fresh, and there’s always a roaring fire and a welcoming atmosphere, even for the family pooches. And to top it all, you can walk – or stagger – home afterwards.

The Inn at Whitewell (no.21) is another of our favourites! It provides exquisitely-cooked country food, in a beautiful setting, overlooking the River Hodder at the back. Dishes here often feature some variety of game from the surrounding moors, or locally reared beef, lamb or chicken. In addition, The Whitewell provides a choice of settings to cater to your level of fancy. A sumptuous meal in the stylish restaurant or a bar meal beside one of its many open fires. A wide variety of wines, beers and ciders are available to compliment your meal. We also love the fact that they feature an independent wine shop on site, with an extensive list of bottles from producers from all over the world. Is there a better way to end the night with your loved ones than selecting your favourite bottle, or two, and heading back up to the Lake House to sip your purchases under the stars in a clear night sky? No light pollution here. The views are simply breathtaking.

Following on at No.22 is the Assheton Arms. Needless to say they also boast some of the region’s finest ingredients, fresh and locally-sourced produce, and even boasting a ‘same day’ seafood requirement – which means your trout or salmon is often served hours after being caught. It makes the most of what the countryside has to offer by using local vegetables and meat. This, too, has a sumptuous, cosy decor, with trimmings to die for!

So, there you have it, a small round-up of some of the best pubs in the country that made the list. But we think it is also definitely worth mentioning some of Clitheroe’s other hidden gems that did not – these include the Waddington Arms, Mitton Hall and Hurst Green’s The Shireburn Arms. We are certain they will be making the list next year, or soon after! But don’t let us – or the Guide – be the only judges of such deliciousness, why not make use of the term ‘pub crawl’ and make a plan to visit them all in a weekend? We guarantee that you will leave a happy and well-fed customer.
