OUR MISSION
At Laythams Holiday Lets Retreat, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Nestled deep within the unspoiled beauty of the Forest of Bowland National Landscape, we believe in protecting and preserving the natural environment that makes this place so extraordinary not just for our guests today, but for future generations.
Our mission is to offer unique, low impact escapes that allow you to reconnect with nature while treading gently on the land. One of the clearest examples of this is in action is at our flagship property The Lakehouse. This completely off-grid barn conversion runs entirely on renewable energy. Powered by a combination of solar and wind, and supplied with fresh, crystal-clear water filtered from our own spring on Burn Fell, The Lakehouse is a testament to what’s possible when sustainability and comfort go hand in hand. The same fresh water spring also supplies our Longhouse properties and solar panels there also assist with the energy usage at our Longhouse accommodations providing clean, renewable energy to support day to day living with minimal environmental impact. By harnessing the natural resources around us, sun, wind, and water, we’re able to reduce our reliance on the grid while still offering a high standard of comfort and warmth for all our guests choosing a more eco-friendly holiday.
Across Laythams we’ve introduced natural septic tank systems to process wastewater in harmony with the environment, and we only use Bio-D cleaning products throughout, all of which are environmentally friendly and safe for our systems.
Recycling and responsible waste management are also an important part of our eco ethos. Each of our properties is equipped with clearly marked recycling facilities to make it easy for guests to separate paper, glass, plastics, and compostables. We actively reduce single-use plastics where possible.
Our commitment to sustainable practices also extends to our day-to-day carbon footprint: we recently swapped out our old pickup truck for a fully electric van, powered entirely by our own solar panels. Whether we’re delivering welcome hampers, running errands between the Longhouse and Lakehouse, or picking up local supplies, this small switch makes a big difference in how we operate responsibly.
To help our guests explore the area in the same spirit, we’re proud to connect with the Eco Escapes initiative in the Forest of Bowland. This brilliant project encourages visitors to discover the region through low impact travel think walking routes, cycling trails, and public transport adventures that highlight the true charm of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With curated itineraries that connect guests to independent local businesses, artisans, and hidden gems, Eco Escapes allows you to slow down and savour the landscape in a mindful, sustainable way.
